Bellroy Venture Sling 6L Review | The Perfect Minimalist Travel Sling?
by Bellroy
We spent nearly a year testing Bellroy's Venture Sling 6L, and its clever dual-access layout, weather-resistant zippers, and surprising capacity make it an easy pick for minimalist travelers, if you can live without a dedicated tech pocket.
A Minimalist Travel Sling Worth a Closer Look
The Bellroy Venture Sling 6L has been a daily and travel companion for close to a year in testing, and it makes a strong case as a compact carry for people who want to pack light without giving up organization. Here's how it holds up across build, layout, and real-world travel use.
Build and Materials
The 6L Venture Sling weighs about 12.1 ounces and measures roughly 11.8 inches wide and 8.7 inches tall, expanding to 9.7 inches in depth when fully loaded. It ships with a detachable strap measuring 51.2 inches.
Material construction is a blend of recycled fabrics, with the composition varying across different panels of the bag:
- 70% recycled nylon
- 10% polyester
- 5% plastic
- An additional 10% nylon
One detail worth noting: the fabric can differ from the front to the top to the bottom, so you may feel slightly different textures across the sling. The lining is also recycled nylon, with this brown colorway paired with a gray interior.
Every zipper on the sling is Aqua Guard, a weather-resistant design that adds a layer of protection against the elements.
Color Options
The brown reviewed here was still available at the time of filming. Bellroy rotates colors throughout the year, with navy, fog, black, and safari mentioned as other options. Some colors sell out, so availability varies.
Organization
For a 6L bag, the Venture Sling offers a surprising amount of structured storage.
Front Pocket
The front pocket includes:
- Two mesh pockets with clean stitching
- A paracord plastic key leash for clipping keys or earbuds
This space handled small daily items easily during testing, including chapstick, a nose inhaler, medication, and charging cables.
Main Compartment
The main compartment is roomy and well divided. Inside you'll find:
- A back pocket suited for a passport and documents
- Two fabric pockets
- A mesh pocket near the top, felt-lined on one side and mesh on the other
- A branded pen pocket
- A dedicated pocket sized for an AirTag
The main compartment uses a two-zip operation. Depending on which direction you open the zippers, you expose a different side pocket, giving you quick access to whichever items you want to reach first. One side works well for frequently used items, while the smaller pouch-style pocket suits a phone.
During a minimalist travel pack-out, the sling comfortably held a passport, a slim wallet, a gaming console, a power bank, an inflatable pillow, an eye mask, noise-canceling headphones, an AirFly adapter, alcohol wipes, an iPad Mini, and a microfiber cloth. The layout makes contents easy to see at a glance, and retrieving something like a passport is quick without disturbing the rest of the pack.
For reference, the larger 9L version in the same line was able to fit full over-ear headphones, which speaks to how accurate Bellroy's stated capacities tend to be.
Comfort and Carry
The detachable 51.2-inch strap gives flexibility in how you wear and carry the sling. The expandable depth means it adapts from a slim everyday profile to a fuller travel load without feeling overstuffed. The dual-side access also reduces the need to fully unpack when you only want one item.
Drawbacks to Consider
A few limitations came up in testing:
- The top flap design can collect debris along the top edge
- There is no dedicated back pocket
- There is no dedicated tech pocket
These are worth weighing if a separate padded tech slot is a priority for you.
Who It's For
The Venture Sling 6L suits minimalist travelers and everyday carry users who want a compact, well-organized sling with weather-resistant zippers and accurate capacity. The dual-access main compartment and variety of internal pockets make it especially useful for people who carry a mix of tech, documents, and small travel essentials and want quick access to each. If a dedicated tech compartment is non-negotiable, you may want to look at other options, but for light, organized travel this remains an easy recommendation.
PackWiseGear Rating
Excellent
| Category | Score | What It Means |
|---|---|---|
| Organization | 8.5/10 | How well the bag helps you separate, arrange and quickly find your gear — pockets, dividers, laptop sleeves, key clips, internal layout. The PackWiseGear team found the Venture Sling full of purposeful organization — dual mesh front pockets, fabric pockets, a pen slot, an AirTag pocket and a key leash — though we flagged the lack of a dedicated tech pocket as a gripe. |
| Materials & Construction | 8.7/10 | Quality of fabric, zippers, buckles, stitching, padding and overall build. We were impressed by the recycled nylon blend, varied quality fabrics, clean mesh stitching and the weatherproof Aqua Guard zippers on every opening. |
| Access | 8.3/10 | How quickly you can reach gear while wearing the bag or on a table — zipper placement, opening style, compartment visibility. The PackWiseGear team praised the two-zip operation and side pockets on both corners that let us see and grab items like our passport instantly, docking a little for debris collecting on the top flap. |
| Comfort Potential | 6.5/10 | Strap width, padding, stability, back-panel design, how the weight sits on the body. We noted the detachable 51.2-inch strap but did not really discuss strap padding, back-panel comfort or how the load sits, so we're scoring this neutrally. |
| Weight Efficiency | 8.3/10 | Usable capacity relative to the bag's own weight and bulk. At 12.1 ounces, the PackWiseGear team was impressed by how much true capacity this sling offers, fitting a surprising amount of gear for its light weight. |
| Versatility | 7.5/10 | How well the bag adapts across commuting, travel, photography, tech carry, EDC and weekend use. We leaned on this as an excellent minimalist travel companion with some EDC potential via the key leash, but our focus stayed largely on travel use. |
How to Read the Scores
- 9.0–10 Exceptional
- 8.0–8.9 Excellent
- 7.0–7.9 Good
- 6.0–6.9 Average
- below 6.0 Significant compromises
Every PackWiseGear rating is weighted by purpose — the categories that matter most for a given kind of gear count for more (Organization and Access weigh heavier for tech pouches; Comfort and Weight Efficiency for large slings and backpacks). Scores run 0–10 with one-decimal precision, and the overall number is computed from the category weights — never hand-entered — so it stays honest and comparable across reviews. Full methodology →
