GORUCK Tactical Fanny Pack Review | Tough but Too Small?

A One-Liter Sling Built Like a Tank

GORUCK built its name on rucking—loading weight into a pack and moving with it—so durability is baked into the brand's DNA. The Tactical Fanny Pack carries that reputation into a compact, one-liter form factor. It's tough, reasonably priced, and useful, but its small footprint and a few design choices raise real questions about how much you can actually carry.

Build and Materials

This is a small sling that doesn't cut corners on construction.

• Dimensions: roughly 9.5 inches by 5 inches, tapering to 2.75 inches at the bottom
• Weight: about 6.4 ounces, so it's very light
• Zippers: YKK
• Buckle: UTX Flex plastic buckle on a one-inch strap
• Front patch: a 3-by-2 leather patch on a Velcro panel

The version shown here is gray waxed canvas, which is no longer available. The same layout carries over to a Cordura version, and GORUCK occasionally drops it in multicam black.

GORUCK offers two production origins: made in the United States (labeled with "Heritage" and priced higher) and made in Vietnam. The unit reviewed here is the Vietnam-made version, which is why it lacks the Heritage label. Organization

The layout is simple, with a front compartment and a back pocket.

Front Compartment

Opening the front reveals one large cavity plus a mesh pocket against the back panel. In a typical EDC loadout, this section handled:

• A bifold wallet in the mesh pocket
• A power bank in the main cavity
• Wireless earbuds
• A pen
• A USB hub
• A phone tucked along the side
• A multi-tool, flashlight, and pocket knife

There's a fair amount of room here, though it fills up quickly once you start layering items.

Back Pocket

The rear pocket features a soft, buffalo-fuzz Velcro lining with padding on both sides. This type of soft-loop Velcro is commonly seen in the concealed-carry world, where users attach holsters or accessories directly to the panel.

On its own, this pocket is limited in usefulness for general EDC. To make it more functional, the reviewer added a Van Quest Velcro extension mod, which created a dedicated spot for a phone (protected by the soft lining) plus stretchy webbing to hold a multi-tool and pocket knife. With the mod installed, the screen sits on the opposite side of the soft lining, keeping it protected from the tools.

Comfort and Carry

The pack rides on a one-inch strap with a plastic buckle. It's easy to wear on the move—around a café, a shopping mall, or day-to-day errands—thanks to its light weight and compact size.

That said, the one-inch strap is narrow. For an EDC sling, a wider 1.5-inch strap with proper padding would improve comfort.

Drawbacks Worth Knowing

A few issues stand out:

• Limited front space: The front pocket is small, and loading the back pocket pushes items forward, so the two compartments compete for space. This mirrors a similar behavior in the Evergoods CAB—notably, Evergoods co-founder Kevin was also a designer at GORUCK.
• No dedicated quick-access pocket: There's no small zippered pocket up top for grab-and-go items.
• Buckle feel: The plastic buckle looks cheap relative to GORUCK's overall quality.
• Oversized patch: The 3-by-2 leather patch dominates the front of a sling this small. A smaller patch, like the roughly 1-by-1 approach seen on Evergoods, would suit the size better.

Who It's For

This is a straightforward, well-built pouch sling for someone who wants a small, durable fanny pack and doesn't mind working around its quirks. The lifetime warranty, YKK zippers, and light weight are genuine strengths, and the Velcro back panel opens the door to concealed-carry use or aftermarket mods like the Van Quest extension.

If you specifically want a compact fanny pack and like this layout, it does the job. But if you're shopping the one-liter category more broadly, the recently released Evergoods one-liter fanny pack is the pick the reviewer would reach for instead.
