A Custom Take on a Compact Sling

The Blank Canvas Accessories (BCA) Rover Pack is a small sling built to order. BCA is a small brand out of Puerto Rico that specializes in customization: you can spec the zippers, the outer shell fabric, the internal lining, add pockets, and add zippers to pockets. This particular unit was configured specifically for how one person wanted to use it, which makes it a good look at what the platform can do when pushed.

Build and Materials

The version reviewed here uses a Topo Designs X-Pac outer shell, a custom fabric that BCA carries. It pairs with customized YKK zippers, and the overall stitching, materials, and product quality all come across as premium.

The standout customization is the internal lining: a Multicam Black fabric described as exceptionally strong and hard. It isn't highly visible from the outside since it lives inside the pack, but the goal was to add structural strength rather than looks. The build also uses a full "360" internal lining upgrade.

A few things to keep in mind on the build:

• Out of the box, the Rover does not include lining on certain panels or at the bottom.
• The 360 lining, the added back pocket, and the upgraded internal lining are all paid extras.

The Mods on This Unit

This specific Rover carries several personal modifications beyond the base design:

• A 3x3 front patch area, here holding a custom "250 Years of the United States" patch.
• Upgraded snake-knot zipper pulls with a silver bead, made from 275 Cordura and sourced from an Etsy seller.
• An added back pocket.

Aside from these, the reviewer notes it is otherwise the same standard Rover design.

Organization and Capacity

Capacity is estimated at roughly four liters, give or take. The layout breaks down into three main areas:

• Front pocket: A stash pocket with 360 lining and a zipper. Suited to small items like chapstick, a nose inhaler, AirPods, a pen, hand sanitizer, and a small aluminum med case.
• Main compartment: The primary storage. It includes one large internal stash pocket on one side, another large pocket on the opposite side, and two small slip pockets. There is no mesh.
• Back pocket: Sized for smaller, flat items only.

A Travel Loadout Example

To show its range, the pack was set up for an eight-hour flight from New York to London. Into the main compartment went an iPad mini, an AirFly transmitter, a three-in-one charger, a laptop charger, a small pouch of adapters (including a USB data blocker), and a wallet. An eye mask and inflatable pillow filled out the remaining room, and by that point the pack was tight.

That loadout illustrates both the strength and the limit of the Rover. It can carry a genuine travel kit, but the main compartment does most of the heavy lifting. With everything packed, the back pocket had room only for a passport, and the front pocket was left holding just a phone and a microfiber cloth.

The front panel also has a single webbing stitch that can be used to hang gear, such as a Hero Clip.

Comfort and Strap System

The Rover's strap uses a YKK LB38X buckle system, and the strap material is lighter than typical seat-belt webbing. There is no heavy shoulder padding built in, though BCA offers extra shoulder padding you can buy. The reviewer's plan was to have a local tailor modify the attachment points to run a preferred padded strap, which signals that comfort under load may depend on your own strap preferences.

Note that making the pack bigger would trade away one of its current strengths: at its present size it slips easily into a seat-back pocket, and added bulk could compromise that fit.

Who It's For

The Rover suits someone who wants a compact, well-built sling for EDC and light travel, and who values the ability to spec materials, lining, and pockets to taste. The rectangular form factor works well for daily carry and fits airplane seat-back pockets, making it a reasonable travel companion for a curated tech and essentials kit.

It's a tougher recommendation if you need larger capacity, generous pleated pockets, or padded straps out of the box, since those either aren't available or require extra spend and DIY modification. If you want this exact configuration, BCA can reportedly replicate the setup on request.
